Gorilla Biscuits—one of the most influential and enduring bands to shape the New York hardcore scene as we know it—and CIV, the group that carried that same honest, positive, high-energy spirit of punk and hardcore onto MTV and the early Warped Tour era, are both fronted by tattoo artist Anthony Civarelli (aka Civ). In a fittingly untraditional (and willfully painful) setup, this interview took place while Civ was tattooing a chest piece on the interviewer, sparking a conversation—much trimmed down here—that ranged from the glory days of NYHC to the realities of mosh-pit violence to his book about his first tour as a Youth of Today roadie.

Outsider talks with frontman Amaru Fenoutt about music scene in Chile vs New York, songwriting and the current state of the country.
Few bands (if any) have played a more pivotal role in putting Long Island hardcore on the map than Vision of Disorder. They were the band that personally pulled me into the local hardcore scene—an undeniable force that blurred boundaries and helped pioneer what would become known as metalcore. Frontman Tim Williams delivered vocals that were powerful, intense, and in-your-face—yet somehow irresistibly sing-along-worthy. Their live shows brought their music to life with the same raw color and energy found on the cover of their iconic self-titled “green drip” debut full-length. Vision of Disorder was the kind of band you couldn’t wait to hear from next. Over the years, Tim has built on that legacy, achieving further success not only with Vision of Disorder but also with his work in Bloodsimple, proving his versatility and staying power in the heavy music world. Today, Tim continues to channel that ferocity with his current project Rollin’ Coffin, and I recently had the chance to catch up with him after their set at Stereo Garden in Patchogue, NY, where they shared the stage with Life of Agony and Jasta.
